  We went to FUMC in Des Moines looking to join a church family and be married in the church. As it turns out, you have to go through a 9 month membership process (and then they will deem if you are "worthy" of even becoming a member) before you can even set a date at this church. We have been life-long Methodists at another church before moving to Des Moines, and it was truly disheartening to not be able to simply transfer our membership. The pastor kept suggesting other churches for us to look at, "Oh, church so-and-so's really nice, this other church is really nice." Ok, why are you telling us this? You obviously don't want us to be members here. No wonder your median age is 70 years old.
  
  Churches are supposed to be about making people feel welcome, giving them a place to worship God freely. We felt terrible when we left this church.

  Ive been a attending First Church now for almost two years. So as a relative newcomer I can tell you that the folks who attend First Church are a reflection of the ever changing face of Des Moines. The Sunday service is a traditional service which I enjoy but FUMC also offers opportunities for non-traditional worship and other wonderful informal events that allow you to meet new people and grow your faith. I find the people there to be warm and welcoming. Whether your from DM or new to town I would recommend a visit by stopping on a Sunday for service or virtually via the informative church website.
